Can onions damage your eyes

Do you want to know if onions are bad for your eyes?  From my own experience, if you can’t stop crying while cutting onions because your eyes hurt, it’s because of a physiological response.

 You might feel some pain and stinging in your eyes for a short time, but the sulfuric acid won’t hurt them permanently.

 They can, however, damage blood vessels and make it harder to see.  However, that’s not all. As you read on, I will give you more information on the subject.

How do I protect my eyes from onions

Cutting and slicing onions can be hard work that could be upsetting.  Some things that might help you cut onions without crying are listed below:

 1. Do your job in the water

 When there is water in a bowl or when you are peeling and slicing an onion, the natural irritant fumes can’t get out, so they can’t rise.

 Additionally, diving glasses are fun to wear and useful.  Abrasion protection can also be found in less obvious safety glasses that you can buy at home shops or as do-it-yourself supplies.

 7. Cut onions while sitting down.

 It is better to squat down when cutting veggies so that your face is not directly above the food and, therefore, above the irritants that are vanishing.

 Because of this, the eyes are a little farther away, so natural tear gas can’t reach them right away.

 8. Use your throat to breathe in air.

 As an option to cutting onions, you can pinch your nose with a clothespin or breathe through your mouth.  Even then, you will have to cry less or not at all.

Why do onions hurt your eyes

In the cell wall of the onion, there is an amino acid called iso-alliin that contains sulfur.

 When the food is cut, the enzyme is released and combines with the amino acid to make the annoying gas propanediol-S-oxide.

 When the fumes come back into the eye after dispersing, they make the eyes wet.  Tears are the body’s way of protecting itself.

 Because of this, we need to protect ourselves from the annoying vapors so we don’t cry.

 The best ways to slice onions are:

 1. Wear safety glasses or contacts

 As was already said, the oily parts of onions make us cry when they get into our eyes.  If you wear safety glasses when cutting onions, this effect will be lessened.

 2. Window for showing

 Also, cutting onions with the window open can help stop crying that is too painful.

 So, the poisonous gases can’t get into the kitchen, which makes it easier for them to leave.  It’s also possible to use the filter hood when it’s cold or wet outside.

 3. Use a food mixer

 A food processor is the best tool for cutting up items.  By trapping air and threads inside the machine, rips can be almost completely avoided.

 4. Make the onion hot

 Putting onions in the freezer for a short time before chopping gets rid of any irritants they might have had. This may seem counterintuitive.

 Putting the onions in the freezer for thirty minutes will make it possible to cut them without breaking them.

 5. Peel with moving water

 Through its ability to stop the chemical reaction that makes harmful gases during the onion-cutting process, water is a very good way to protect yourself from them.

 This leads to the simple advice that peeling onions under running water will keep you from crying.

But why are onions so nasty to my eyes

 Plus, the taste may get better through this.

 So, cutting down on the production of propanil oxide would raise the level of thiosulfonate, the chemical that gives green onions their unique taste.
